Poor Richard III--from “the winter of our discontent” to “my kingdom for a parking spot.” How the mighty have fallen.

Because, the simple fact is that a case of scoliosis does not a hunchback make, and none of the recent discoveries have managed to shed any light on the darkest mystery of dear old Richard's reign.

Whether this means that they had been spirited off to one of Richard’s northern castles; sent overseas into France or Burgundy; or shuffled off this mortal coil, is at the heart of the mystery.

Far be it from me to deny this woman’s capacity for patience and double-dealing, because, dammit, she survived the Wars of the Roses. Not only that, her son became king of England.

This copy in particular belongs to the Folger Shakespeare Library and appears to have been attacked by a rogue annotator. Quid est Doctor? Who is the doctor?

If that boar were white, I’d ask if Richard III was feeling pretty today. But, more importantly, 99% of the time, marginalia makes no sense whatsoever and we simply accept it. Quid est Doctor, indeed.

Again, in this printed edition of Fabyan’s text from 1516, we seem to have a bit of odd marginal doodling, but this edition is full of these sorts of things.

Now, I don’t suppose this is any weirder than monkeys playing butt-trumpets in the grand scheme of things, but it’s certainly interesting.

It would, after all, explain everything and exonerate everyone! We might even manage to make peace between the Richard III Society and any Henry VII fans that may still be hiding in the woodwork...

From the paper I gave for the Societas Fontibus Historiae Medii Aevi Inveniendis, vulgo dicta, “The Pseudo Society” at this year’s International Medieval Congress in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

The abstract I sent in last September is as follows:

In light of the recent archaeological excitement surrounding the possibly exhumed remains of King Richard III, it seems an appropriate time to settle the question once and for all: What happened to the Princes in the Tower?

This paper proposes a new theory—based on several peculiar bits of marginalia found in copies of Robert Fabyan’s Newe Chronicles of England and France and several other annals from the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries—that fully exonerates the late, lamented Richard and explains how two young boys were able to vanish into thin air from the Tower of London. It also explains why, some thirty years later, the also late lamented Saint Thomas More found himself unable to complete his History of King Richard III; in short, what he discovered was too dangerous to reveal to the world, and he chose instead to leave his satirical masterpiece forever paused in the middle of a sentence.

They say the greatest trick the Devil played was convincing the world he did not exist. It turns out aliens work the same way.

A) Hit them with your big idea right up front and then explain it later

or B) lead up to it and save your big bang for the end

fellow scholars, what is your method? I tend to go B (still with a thesis though), but profs seem to like A….

I used to prefer B, but have since learned (the hard way) that if you want to get published you absolutely must do A. It’s a MUST.

Now, if you have a sweet-ass piece of evidence that causes the juices of discipline-specific rapture to overflow like the banks of the Nile during flood season, and will leave your blind readers sweating and writhing in the ecstasy of jouissance, then sure, put it last IF if the structure of your argument allows it. But ONLY after you’ve thrown down the gauntlet of your argument, stated your claim(s), and laid out the stakes in the opening. Then your article can be like a one-two punch.

PUNCH, slap, pinch, pinch, SUCKER-PUNCH is a good structure.

Poke, poke, pinch, pinch, PUNCH is not.

My experience is that A is better for articles and B is better for conference papers.
